It will also go bang with Brooklyn's DIANE CLUCK (who also plays on HD new album) splashing baroque John Fahey-esque guitar parts overlaid with her hauntingly clear voice, enveloping the listener in an atmosphere that is unique and intimate. At times dark, and at times quirky and funny, the lyrics of her songs are stories woven together with love and a little bit of pain. The unstoppable force that is the admirable, free spirited duo of TOM and TOM come to add fun and mischief to tonights acoustic love-in with banjos and plaid shirts.

POLANSKI'S CUL DE SAC (Roman Polanski / 1966 / UK / 111mins / Cert 15) (fri 29th / midnite / £4/3) Before being seduced by Robert Evans and the American studio system of the early-1970s, Roman Polanski cut his teeth with a series of smaller budget films made in Europe. Of these films, Cul-De-Sac was the project closest to his heart. A claustrophobic look at human relationships pushed to the limit, the film is less domestic drama than absurdist comedy of cruelty. With a little horror thrown in. A wounded criminal and his dying partner take refuge at a beachfront castle. The owners of the castle, a meek Englishman and his willful French wife, are initially the unwilling hosts to the criminals. Quickly, however, the relationships between the criminal, the wife, and the Englishman begin to shift in humorous and bizarre fashion. Featuring a career-best performance from Donald Pleasance, and one of the final screen performances from Catherine Deneuve's sister Francois Dorleac, the film is a perfect slice of late-night terror for the midnight movie crowd. plus INDEPENDENT EXPOSURE MAYahem with short film MOVIE COOL directed by David Liban. This short film explores the effect that cinema has on its audience. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- INDEPENDENT EXPOSURE X A MONTH OF SHORT FILMS ALL MONTH- QUALITY SHORTS AT THE CUBE 2005 marks the 10th Anniversary of Microcinema International’s Independent Exposure screening program! 'GROWORLD POCKET-ECOLOGIES' a short introduction to guerrilla gardening SATURDAY 30th April / 10pm-4pm / Venue: The Sea Scout Hut, Redcliffe Wharf A day of mapping, making seed balls and scattering via a city roam. The GroWorld initiative germinated from a fascination with the robustness and diversity of things that grow. We are spawning a trans-local edge-habitat, a distributed network of public gardens, planted on abandoned or otherwise 'de-activated' sites in urban and sub-urban environments around the globe. Vegetation will be encouraged to sprout in the nooks, crannies and corners of the city via 'seed ball' operations. Different species of native wild plants will be selected, including ground-covers, shrubs, grasses, flowering plants, bushes and trees. All seeds are then thoroughly mixed together with plant compost and red or brown clay and then rolled into 'seed-balls',complete eco-systems contained in a hard protective shell of dried clay. A map of potentially fertile, but neglected sites in city-centres, industrial and residential areas will be researched and used. The seed-balls are scattered on these sites, and mapped via a city roam. After the first rains, the seed-balls decompose, providing enough nourishment for the fragile seedlings. In 2-3 years, the gardens should become fully grown and self-sustaining. It is hoped the sites evolve of their own accord - into patches of autonomous organic wilderness in the midst of an urban jungle, grown and molded by their surroundings, care-takers and temporary dwellers. Industrial ruins overgrown by mutated nature, car-parks, rooftop gardens and corner-parks, remnant islands of diverse local vegetation... Children Welcome The seed-balls were first rolled by the Japanese biologist Masanobu Fukuoka www.seedballs.com More information groworld visit: http://fo.am/groworld

plus special guests and DJs A Qu Junktion (Sat 30th / 8pm / £7) This is the original underground action with Krautrock, Spiritual Americana, Eastern Electronix and driving Rock dynamics swelling up inside one of the most pivotal cult acts in the music scene. PLUS the ex-singer from prime time CAN, now on his ever-lasting tour....the manical hyperactive...DAMO SUZUKI. After TAGO MAGO, EGE BAMYASI etc, Damo took a long rest. Over the past 4 years, however, he has been turning up to sing his staggering passionate adhoc vocals with a vast array of 'sound carriers' worldwide. CUL DE SAC are one band he keeps returning to. Hear why! Like SLINT, MISSION OF BURMA and SUICIDE, CUL DE SAC were well ahead of the pack. But this is no re-formation bullshit. Cul De Sac don't stop. They are pretty much the arch independent art-rock band. Without CUL DE SAC there may be no TORTOISE, GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR or SUNBURNED HAND OF THE MAN. Their deep spacious music, with a myriad of influences, and the vastness of their sound has made Cul De Sac the forefathers of those experimenting outside the Rock n Roll box. Their sense of drama and melodicism does not date. See what happens when the two meet. A special set is planned. http://www.culdesac.org http://www.damosuzuki.de/

FISH / MONDAY 2nd May 11AM / Porlock Wier: leave from Cube Cinema carpark Fishing and seaweed identification with seashore walking and snacking The state of stocks in the South West is a continual debate between scientists and fishermen and various indicators are interpreted differently. Some fishermen point to continued stocks of high quality fish whilst scientists point toward a decrease in landings in recent years. There are a number of basic ways of cooking all seaweeds. Slice them very thin and serve raw as a salad. A Chinese-style dressing of soy sauce, vinegar and a little sugar is a good accompaniment. Slice them a little less thinly, and stir-fry in sesame or sunflower oil for about 5minutes-or in more oil at a higher temperature, until they are crisp on the outside.(Crisp-fried seaweeds are popular Chinese appetisers. Add larger pieces to soups and stews to thicken them. Most seaweeds contain alginates - a kind of vegetable gelatin - which are released during prolonged cooking. ...Maybe we could make fish soup.

A Float Records Night with Eftus Spectun + V.I. (Thu 5th / 7.30pm / £5) Float bring forth a packed triple bill of unpure art collective madness. Catch the nervous New York energy of highly energetic quartet Gang Gang Dance. Their legendary mystical live shows bombard the audience with Middle-Eastern chants, butchered horns, stuttering rhythms, dub inflections, cabaret pianos, and a trainwreck of synths and keys. This is incredible tape splicing, genre morphing performance that unites lo-tech equipment in invigorating organic sonic meltdown evoking the tribal collectivism of Out Hud, the inspired cacophony of Deerhoof and the primitive melodies of Animal Collective. Expect a swirling and intense web of new no-wave mayhem, citrus rhythms and nitrous vocals from members of Cranium, White Magic, Angelblood and Neil Michael Hagerty. Earlier in the evening, smile and a vomit with local heart throbs Eftus Spectun, who deliver a completely new set. Plus textbook-notated, analogue undulations from textbook basslord V.I. (Lukas Moodysson / 2004 / Sweden / 98min / Cert18) In a decrepit apartment, a young man watches as his father and a friend shoot an amateur porn film. Issues of morality, reality TV and friendship are explored. Moodysson once again abandons the faith and optimism in human relations he displayed in earlier films 'Together' and 'Show Me Love', to once again examine the bleak impossibility of happiness in modern society. At a press conference for the film he claimed his inspiration came from a visit to the zoo, when he saw blind rats attempting to make contact with each other, whilst dozens of children banged on the glass. Whilst Moodysson's bleak vision may not be to everyone's taste, he is expertly following the in the footsteps of Bergman, attempting to find compassion in the darkest places, and using film to find answers to questions often left unasked.

Pack into the Microplex's intimate confines to catch this lot while you can. The magical urban-pagan celtic sound of eight young people from the prospering Glaswegian underground (including members of Will Oldham's band and Telstar Ponies), Lucky Luke combine the 70s folk rock sounds of Fairport Convention with the Velvet Underground's edge in a joyous battle of flute, fiddle, harmonium and voices. Their debut album is out now and getting amazing reviews. Support comes in the form of a special acoustic set from Gonga vocalist Joe Volk (Invada/Plug 58); tunes in the bar supplied by Fat Paul.

with Knowledge of Bugs + Duncan Fleming (Thu 13th / 8pm / £5) The debut album from Bristol's first protagonists of Victorian clockworktronica is finally upon us: pure aural morphine of such monumental, Tarkovskian conceptual proportions it will make your stereo sob with uncontrollable existential rage. Equally at home on the contemporary dance floor as in the skin-flick cutting room or the lounge of a bohemian Chelsea satanist, this is music to jump in front of trains to. Music to start fires on the faces of men. Recorded and produced by actual real humans Guy Bartell and Nick Talbot (Gravenhurst/Warp) amidst rumours of Masonic dabblings, bloodletting rituals and muscular quantities of backstage prescription high, 'Virtute et Industria' contains some of the most brutal and beautiful music to come out of Bristol, ably demonstrating the band's devotion to the holy trinity of the three Philips - Glass, Larkin and K Dick. Now joined by Knowledge of Bugs and Max Milton, the Bronnt Industries Kapital electro-acoustic ensemble descend upon the Cube for an evening of sonic necromancy. Mr.Bugs will also perform a full Knowledge of Bugs set and Duncan "War Against Sleep" Fleming will present a thirty minute supporting lecture on the Illuminati.

(Sat 14th / 8pm / £6/5) An evening in the Republica de Santa Banana - a multi-media tropical extravaganza Popacatepetl are here to blow your expectations away with a curious hybrid of Brazilian samba and Trinidadian calypso, mixed in with influences as diverse as medieval pop, 1930s dance band music and Turkish kasbah rock. 'Tropical Pop The Wonderhorse', a warmly - and indeed, expertly - played collection of exuberant brilliance. Likened to the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band for their theatricality and eclecticism, or a Latin-American Spike Jones directed by Federico Fellini, they're a genuine ensemble act: the soloists are virtuosic and the rhythm section knows how to make the audience sweat. The band hail from the island paradise known as the Republica de Santa Banana, a country situated somewhere in the imagination between Trinidad, Brazil and Chipping Sodbury.

with very special guest MICHIO KURIHARA Plus MORNINGSTAR A Qu Junktion (Thurs 19th May / 8pm / £7) Supreme chic literary indie heroes and heroines chime, swoon and glide through their impressive catalogue of wonderful songs. (Derek Jarman / 1979 / UK / 95mins / Cert15) (Fri 20th / midnite / £4/3) ;) One of Derek Jarman's finest moments - a post-punk reinvention of Shakespeare's final play filmed in an abandoned house in North London. When first approached to play the part of Miranda, Toyah Wilcox claimed to be uninterested as she didn't fancy memorising long and complicated speeches - Jarman's reply was that they would be cutting out the boring bits. Rather than this being a sacreligous move, Jarman successfully substitues words for images, so much so that what few words remain merely act as signposts to the significance of what we see onscreen. An atmospheric journey to Prospero's island that is one of the few truly cinematic Shakespeare adaptations - the Bard would be proud.

Guilty, probably, but BABEL fill golden blue folkscapes with tales of honey dripping sorrow, murderous ballads and paens to comedowns, love, loss and boredom. (Wes Anderson / 2004 / USA / 119min / Cert15) (Tue 24th / 8pm / £2) Having now almost completely abandoned a traditional approach to film storytelling, Wes Anderson has secured his position as contemporary cinema's foremost visual stylist. Displaying an interest in symmetrical composition and meticulous production design, the joy of viewing is less that of seeing a film than immersing oneself in a series of intricate tableaux, each one designed to complement the last like a well-turned coffee table journal. What the film lacks in substance, it more than makes up for in style and its countless joys are supplemented by terrific animated sequences by Henry "Nightmare Before Christmas" Selick and Casio keyboard underwater soundtrack.
