Ang Lee / 2005 / USA / 35 mm / 134 mins / cert 15) (Mon 20th-Thu 23rd / 9pm / £4/3/2ttt) In recent years, the mainstream motion picture industry in America has fallen into the habit of making high-concept issue movies that, whilst attempting to empathise with a minority group, often objectify them to the point of patronisation. It is the avoidance of this that makes Brokeback Mountain such a refreshing change. Despite director Ang Lee's tendency to allow picturesque landscape to dominate the frame, the background is never allowed to fully substitute for the human drama at the centre of this tender love story of lonesome cowboys. Due in no small part to the faithful adaptation of E. Annie Proulx's briliant short story, and to the terrifically understated performances by Jake Gylenhaal and Heath Ledger, he slow power of the tale never bubbles over into melodrama or camp cliche. As such, it will be well deserving of the little golden men it will no doubt attract on Oscar night.
(Fri 24th / 8pm / £5) My Latest Novel are a Glaswegian five-piece in the tradition of melodic popsters Belle and Sebastian and The Pastels. All breezy folk melodies, girl-boy vocals and soaring violins, they wooed last year's Green Man Festival, and went on to play with Smog and tour with Pixies. Now signed to Bella Union, their lush instrumentation and anthemic songwriting have drawn comparisons with 2005's slow-burning sensations, Arcade Fire. Support from Semi Finalists & Matthew Cheney's glitter ball indie ensemble, Arctic Circle.

Team Brick + Simon Breed + Joe McGann + Leila Music and Feral Trade + DJ Nik Young (Sat 25th / 8pm / £5) We start this exciting evening by introducing you to LEILA MUSIC. A London singer-songwriter currently making a name on the alt-folk circuit. Her songs are fragile & introspective & have drawn comparisons with Cat Power, Nina Nastasia, Patrick Wolf and others. JOE McGANN - a young musician who has been writing his own material on guitar since he was 14. Meanwhile in the bar Iranian rice will be served SIMON BREED is an empassioned, captivating crooner Fresh from supporting The Magic Numbers. 'like Jeff Buckley with Tourette's" NME! ...and finally tonight we give you TEAM BRICK in his own words "noisy.. vocal.. improv.. ackh." FERAL TRADE will be providing Dinner in the bar with products traded in over social networks and we are honoured to have her back but this time spinning the wheels...DJ NIK YOUNG.
(Sun 26th / 7.30pm / £6) The extraordinary rootless but cocooned 'Finnish Feral' scene is nestled amongst post-industrial Tampere and the coastal cities, Helsinki and Turku. This is a fluid and non-hierarchical group of artists existing by their own rules and influences. Tonight highlights their magic realist tendancies and patchwork pysch-dream music. Obscure, amazing and out there - Fonal Records is the key off-centre of the movement. Label boss Sami records as Es, whose fragile collages of hypnotic loops, overloaded field recordings and piano truly live up to his name (Es is short for "Experimental Songcycles"). The kind of minimalist compositions that draw your ears to microscopic detail then launch you skyward into dizzying, open-ended vastness. Islaja is Finnish spirit Merja Kokkonen of Avarus/Kemialliset Ystävät. Her beautifully phased acid-folk blurs layers of harmonium, multitracked vocals, barely-there guitar and hand percussion, evoking the bleak plains of Nico's drone-poems. Kiila are a loose-knit psychedelic folk ensemble (featuring Es) who deploy low frequency drones, ghostly vocal incantations, derranged percussion and shards of radio interference to mesmeric effect. (Sun 2nd / 3pm / £4/3) Paul Wheatcroft wants to use the Cube to show his favourite film, Jour de fete by Jacques Tati, which also happens to have as co-star - the bike. He would like all comers to cycle to the event, especially those new to cycling. He wants cyclists to have fun and to encourage new riders through humour. Cycling is so intelligent, why don't we all do it?, he asks. The film follows the arrival of a small travelling fair to a rural French village. We share the humiliations of the postman (Jacques Tati) as he does his rounds on his trusty bicycle in spite of the efforts of the itinerant fairground workers to tempt him into modern ways of mail delivery. His speedy and sometimes drunken efforts to ride and deliver are pure ballet! French with English subtitles; black and white with a glimpse of red, white and blue. Secure bike parking available at PCT car park, round the corner from the Cube in Charles Street.

(Mon 3rd / 7:30pm / £3/£2 - though nobody turned away through lack of funds) In conjunction with Bristol Indymedia, Gender is Fake presents a night which questions our thinking about gender, sex and sexuality. We bring you excerpts from Venus Boyz, an award-winning and original documentary about female masculinity. Also 'Politically Erect' - short films about revolt in sexuality and sexuality from Montreal. And join us for our queer quiz, a piece of interactive, thought-provoking entertainment. Plus prizes, zines, and vegan food. Is gender a patriarchal invention? Is a person's sexuality as fixed as we think? Is our gender identity governed by capitalism? Come along to question barriers and boundaries, and celebrate the freedom to exist in the un-named!
(Tue 4th / 7.30pm / £5) Local Kid brings on The Evens, a duo from Washington DC who play stripped down, almost folk-like, variations on the rock song. Their sound relies on intimacy as much as intensity, their lyrics as politically charged as they are emotionally wrought. Yet at the heart of the band's dynamic is a certain quietitude and sensitivity that ties all this together into a strong pop sensibility. With this in mind it may come as a surprise to many to learn that punk luminaries Ian MacKaye (Fugazi, Minor Threat) and Amy Farina (The Warmers) are the faces behind the project, but then again on closer consideration it shouldn't. The same vitriol and passion burns as brightly in this band as in any of its predecessors, the only difference being the subtlety with which the message is delivered. Live, the band performs seated, choosing to route their vocals through guitar amps rather than through the usual PA. In-between song repartee and jokey asides promote participation of all kinds (we're talking collective singing, whistling and finger-clicking here folks). These things contribute to the band's ability to powerfully connect with their audience on an honest, straightforward level. Having the confidence to speak out and openly means a lot to this band, and what better way can they achieve this than by actively encouraging an understanding familiarity between themselves and their fans.

ERASERHEAD (Lynch / 1977 / USA / 89mins / 35mm / cert18) (Sat 8th / midnite / £4/3) David Lynch's first feature is a dreamy, absurdist horror story staring JACK NANCE as Henry, a man whose simple life is turned on its head when his girlfriend announces she is pregnant. A series of dark events and encounters (including flapping bonsai roast chickens and a girl who lives in a radiator) help drive our hero into distress and darkness, evoking many images and moods that would be echoed in all of the directors' subsequent work, including all the quirky, comic undertones that he is known and loved for. Grainy black and white film captures an inspired use of light and shade- making the best of the productions meager budget, and a droning, industrial soundtrack- that must be experienced at the cinema to be fully appreciated- all helped to render this film a highly influential cult classic. Do not miss this opportunity to catch this midnight movie as it was meant to be seen!

AN EVENING WITH HENRY JACOBS (Sun 9th / 8pm / £4/3) Rare and specially produced material form the content for this excursion into the life and works of sound pioneer Henry Jacobs. A radio addict growing up in 30s Chicago, his first job was directing dance skits for Mexico's first TV station. Discovery of the Nagra tape-recorder in the early 50s enabled him to play around with field recordings and performance cut-ups, experiments which ultimately landed him hosting a BERKLEY, CALIFORNIA ethnic music radio show. Curating surroundsound events in a planetarium and appearing on Lenny Bruce's first record ensued. In the 60s and 70s he concentrated more on film work, culminating in 1971 with skewed masterwork THE FINE ART OF GOOFING OFF, which boasts beautifully clunky animation by Bob McClay. Sound editor Walter Murch cites him as a massive influence. Now 81, he lives in a self-built house and espouses the benefits of left-handed pingpong. This evening we'll be taking a dip in the wide and weird world of Henry Jacobs, including two episodes of GOOFING OFF and a tasty selection of short film and audio work. Introduced by Ian Francis of Birmingham's 7 Inch Cinema. ffi see www.importantrecords.com/jacobs

TRESOR BERLIN: THE VAULT & THE ELECTRONIC FRONTIER Michael Andrawis / 2005 / UK / digital / 62mins / no cert) (Mon 10th / 7:30pm / £4/3) After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the club Tresor became the unlikely location of a cultural revolution. Housed in the vault room of a disused department store, it grew from an inside tip into an international institution drawing in people worldwide. This new documentary follows the club's founder Dimitri Hegemann through (and underneath) the streets of Berlin as he charts the events and developments of dance music's evolution in Germany from the mid 80's to present day. He explains how the club was a focus for the growing together of East and West Berlin through music. The Detroit connection is also explored, with the likes of Jeff Mills and Juan Atkins describing the venue's magnetic atmosphere. House of God founder Tony Surgeon and poineer of the 'Brighton sound' Christian Vogel also speak, plus there's rare footage showing cult figure Professor Timothy Leary during his first lecture in Eastern Europe.

(Mon 10th / 9pm / £4/3) A most splendid of Rock 'n' Roll odysseys. The movie is fast and gracious as it details the life, times and music of the band the Flaming Lips. It captures the sense of needing to belong, to freak out, push the limits and survive that is at the heart of any band. It is about artistic survival and universal truths. This is a beautiful drama that will move anyone with a slight interest in the band. All soundtracked by the FL sense of cartoon fun, life affirming lyrics and cosmic music. Fourteen years in the making the film uncovers treasures including super 8 footage of the Coyne (FL singer) family in full abandon, death defying on-stage pyrotechnics, the influence of the Butthole Surfers, the heartache of drug abuse and some amazingly intimate moments amongst the footage of their technicolour stage shows. Irrepressible and inspirational. The new Flaming Lips album 'At War With The Mystics' will be with us, see it's slow burning evolution on super colour and enhanced sound. 'Stereo Ambulance Religious Sounds' in the bar. http://www.fearlessfreaks.com
DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN (Pennebaker/Hegedus/Doob / USA / 2001 / 35mm / 98mins / cert U) (Tues 11th / 7pm / £2ttt) The musicians behind the Soggy Bottom Boys, which is the name of the fictional bluegrass band in the Coen Brothers' film O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? are brought together at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. As well as performances from the likes of Emmylou Harris, Ralph Stanley and Alison Krauss, the film also captures the backstage rehearsals and preparations that went into the event and provides a brief history of folk and bluegrass music. Down From The Mountain makes you look at country music in a completely different way.

(Jim Jarmusch / 1997 / USA / 35mm / cert 15 / 106 mins / £2ttt ) All too often music documentaries are sycophantic portrayal of an over-inflated ego, usually commissioned by the proud owner of that ego as a way of offering adulating fans a rare insight into the private life of a genius who is really just a regular guy. And all too often this information is presented to us in the most indifferent way, lumping together interview footage with concert footage to a template established somewhere in the dinosaur days of the 1970s, a habit which, despite being declared obsolete by Spinal Tap as far back as 1982, still persists. Thank god, then, for Jim Jarmusch. Bringing the effortless cool of his hip indie features ‘Stranger than Paradise’ and ‘Mystery Train’ to the documentary field, he delivers – with infectious enthusiasm – a portrait of Neil Young which is affectionate without sycophancy, and rocking without the threat of parody. Along with ‘Stop Making Sense’ and the up-coming ‘Block Party’ one of the truly great music films of all time.

INSIDE THE MINDSCAPE OF ALAN MOORE (Dez Vylenz / 2003 / UK / 35mm / no cert) (Wed 12th / 8pm / £4/3) In the wake of the release of V FOR VENDETTA, the latest film to attempt a 'big screen' adaptation of an Alan Moore story, we present a screening of this rarely seen documentary in which the author himself leads us on a tour through his artistic development, and into the inner workings of his evolving spirituality. Despite being the worlds most critically acclaimed creator of comic books and graphic novels, he is virtually unknown within wider cultural circles. Essentially, this a sprawling monologue that illuminates Moore's worldview with hallucinatory effects and reconstructions. A self-styled recluse with no thirst for fame and fortune, Moore has built up an incredible body of work. From his breakthrough series WATCHMEN, MIRACLEMAN, and V in the 80's which revolutionised the medium and forced comics to 'grow-up', to 90's masterworks FROM HELL and THE LEAGUE OF EXTRORDINARY GENTLEMEN (both made into dismal features that Moore has utterly renounced), to self-published more recent gems, the writer has always been at the top of his game. This documentary draws together his landmark releases, providing delicious close-up footage of the artwork, finally launching the viewer into a wider, more colourful world of magic, language and empowerment than most could imagine.

(Thu 20th / 8pm / £5) High concentration electronic defects and stroboscopic rainbows of distortion from Prurient, the solo project of Dominick Fernow (Load Records). Combining processed vocals, organic electronics, field recordings and heavy use of feedback, his live show is a confrontational "blitzkrieg attack" of physical contortions and guttural vocalisations. Prurient finished 2005 with a comprehensive US tour with champions Wolf Eyes and an ongoing series of collaborations with Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore. Burning Star Core is violin player, voice twister and all-round DIY electronics dude C. Spencer Yeh, from Cincinatti, USA. Operating since 1993, he remains defiantly underground, prolifically releasing CDs, CDr's and cassettes on his own Dronedisco imprint and other tiny labels. He's recently collaborated with Comets On Fire, John Olson (Wolf Eyes) and Chris Corsano/Paul Flaherty. On her quest to return home, Helena searches for the Mirrormask, an object of enormous power, which is her only hope of escaping the Dark Lands. MIRRORMASK is the groundbreaking effort from graphic novelist and director Dave McKean and storytelling master Neil Gaiman. Teaming up with the Jim Henson Company, they combine live action with digital animation in a spectacular concoction that will dazzle audiences across the board.
(Sun 23rd / 8pm / £10/7) "The cleverest, crankiest, wittiest, wildest, and most character-driven sci-fi adventure in 25 years; it's the best outer-space trip I've been on since the empire struck back." - Scott Weinberg, EFILMCRITIC.COM "Effectively a Western in space, Serenity is a thoroughly entertaining, smartly written, beautifully acted, rip-roaring action-adventure movie, that will appeal to both Firefly fans and newcomers alike." - Matthew Turner, VIEWLONDON Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his crew take smuggling and robbery jobs to keep their ship afloat, and to stay under the radar of The Alliance, the conglomerate that not only rules the galaxy, but was on the opposite side of the war Mal lost years ago. But when Simon (Sean Maher) and his unstable, telepathic sister, River (Summer Glau) join the crew, they get in much more trouble than they bargained for. A mysterious man (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is after River, because she stumbled onto a secret no one was supposed to know... and the Alliance will do anything to get her back. Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite and Ron Glass also star. *** This is a Charity showing of this excellent film, benefitting WaterAid and the Kevin Smith memorial trust [http://www.kevinsmithtrust.com/].
