Self Portrait November 2002

Working locally as an independent artist without state help, answering to myself only, I create art from my experience and reflection of society. Earning money in an office environment encourages further response to social role-play and financial dependence. Working in a wider international context I'm a powerless individual observing from a distance the geopolitical games played between the world's political, religious and corporate leaders. From this springs the beginnings of an art of protest and propaganda. A world of avatars in an environment packed with signs and representations dug from the trenches of cultural warfare. Making art is part of my thought processes, as research in itself towards an as yet unknown goal. Observing conflict between opposing powers, each with its own culture, politics and ideology. Converting these warring energies into Art with paint and pixels thus supplying myself with a quiet but increasingly confident voice. Subsistence as an artist demands an understanding of how to achieve and maintain a flexible lifestyle. Earning money, creating art and travelling in order to nurture a cross-border network whether in Bristol, Berlin or Novi Sad. Reacting effectively when and wherever it is necessary to do so is, for me, both practice and ambition.
