Cube Cola lab/presentation - Nova Cinema Brussels 17th June 2pm onwards

NOVA CINEMA

Part of program: Imaginary Property

Made one batch of Cube-Cola, one batch of Tim-Cola (see mail below) and brought a can of Coca-Cola.
The lab ended with a comparative tasting of the three...looks like Cube-Cola may have vanilla extract
as a permanent member of its ingredients list.

With thanks to Lab Assistant laia Sadnrni.

Hi,

first of all let me thank you for the very useful cube cola website. Some
weeks ago I stumbled across the original OpenCola recipe and consequently
ordered the ingredients and tried to follow the instructions. However, it
turned out impossible to create the proposed emulsion with just 3ml of
water. I found your website, and all went well (didn't even need a driller:
a 5~@ milk whisk worked perfectly for my ~50ml emulsion).
I continued to fumble with the ingredients, as I wasn't quite satisfied with
the taste. Both Open und Cube cola taste more like a mixture of cola and
orange lemonade. After some smelling tests with varying oil mixtures I
eventually quartered the amount of orange oil and reduced the overall amount
of oils (as the taste was a little overabundant). Lime seems most important,
but the spicy notes shouldn't be neglected too - the mixture at OpenSoda.org
doesn't taste like cola at all. So far the taste had become much closer to
Coca Cola. Yet there was still something missing: vanilla. As I had no real
vanilla extract I took ordinary vanillin sugar. 10gr on 1l of sirup added
the missing vanilla note. Here is my receipe for the oil mixture:

6.00 ml lime oil
4.00 ml lemon oil
2.00 ml orange oil
1.00 ml cassia oil
1.00 ml nutmeg oil
0.50 ml coriander oil
0.50 ml lavender oil

One thing remains unsolved, however - did you ever manage to create a clear
cola? Mine gets cloudy - the more the colder the water. I guess an alcohol
extraction of the oils should remove undissoluble parts of the oils. Maybe
I'll try this the next time...

Regards,
Tim
