HOUNDS TOOTH AND HERRING BONE
small creatures on parade!
In keeping with the here gallery’s beginnings and first show, West Coast to the West Country, the gallery presents the work of three of California’s freshest artist/ designers. You may have come across their work in the here shop with their delicate and intriguing prints and embroidery on clothing, accessories and books. All three graduated from California College of Arts and Crafts in 2002 and have shown in San Francisco, Portland, Los Angeles, San Jose and San Diego.
Kelly Jones is from the valley in Southern California and is into children’s books, deer, the sea, and plant life. Marci Washington, who grew up around Northern California, is interested in botanical studies, wild animals, and awkward girls. Alika Cooper grew up in San Diego and likes elephants, carousel animals, minnows, and stage fright. A recent review read:
“Her work is attracting attention for its emotional intensity and strength of composition. Juxtaposing memory and artefact, her work explores the poetics of desire, identity and loss.”
Expect to see a mix of oils on wood from Marci; acrylic, ink, gouache and watercolour, on wood with lace, fabric and thread by Kelly; and Alika’s acrylic and silk-screening on wood cut outs and paper. She is also doing mini quilts incorporating silk-screening, appliqué and embroidery.
Showing in the here shop at the same time will be Deth P. Sun (pronounced "Dae"), who is a fellow graduate of California College of Arts and Crafts and has exhibited throughout the US since 1996. His paintings of cat-like animals and kids in animal suits, mostly in acrylic on wood, are often compared to the work of Maurice Sendak (Where The Wild Things Are). Whilst his characters posses the same innocence, his influences come from the anime films of Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke) and the Brazilian street artists Os Gemeos. The addition of empty speech bubbles or occasional words can evoke either joy or melancholy.

three of the four artists made the trip over from california just for this show!!! they were really nice and at the opening we had matt from movietone spinning 78s... it was a swell time!
