Me
and my Monster
In the eyes of Gunilla
Jä hnichen, there is nothing unusual about a little girl meeting an
alien or a unicorn. In fact, these spooky, almost nightmarish encounters are
commonplace in her paintings. They juxtapose the innocent, fairytale elements
of a childhood world with the latent perils and confusion of the adult world.
‘ Me and my Monster’, originally titled, ‘My Monsters and Me’ features
oil paintings and drawings with water colour by German artist Gunilla
Jä hnichen. Showing little girls, little boys, their little playmates
and monsters, Gunilla says ‘Sweetness has it's dark side, who is good and
who is bad, nobody knows.’ This is the first time we, in the UK, have been
able to step into the world that Gunilla calls ‘The Abyss of Harmlessness’
here gallery is delighted and excited to be the first gallery in the UK to show
Gunilla‘s work and we are looking forward to working with her while she
is in Bristol for this exhibition.
Gunilla is travelling from Germany to be at the opening of this show on Sat 3rd
from 7.30pm- please come along and join her! Me
