Colin Smith Night/The Death of Movieoke?

Filed under: General, performance, Movieoke, Richie Paradise — richie paradise @ 12:32 am

Hello chums, long time no see, which funnily enough has been the problem with Movieoke…………

Anyhow more of that later. Back in July old Cube Friend Colin Smith blessed us with his unmeasurable talent. Colin played for around an hour, showcasing a lot of standards, some originals, the odd montage and frankly far too much Genesis….

Anyhow the lad done well son, he done well.

Afterwards we had Movieoke with me and Colin as usual playing a bit of mood music and playing some tunes to ‘heighten the mood’, and Tom to whip up the audience into a frenzy, problem was said audience just weren’t there, well that’s never stopped us……

An interesting musical version of The Big Lebowski there. Shamefuly we then went all a bit drama studenty with NO FILMS but suggestions by Lea (she’s the one you’ll hear yelling in the background

Now I love Movieoke and put alot of effort into it, as does everybody else, so it’s been a real disappointment to see not many people come and support it, especially when it can be so funny. I blame Max Blackout for succumbing to an interweb virus……
Rant over, expect to see Movieoke sporadically from now on I’d say, though if you are desperate for it let me know.

Ciao for now, Richie Paradise Richie Paradise

Movieoke on over darlin’

Movieoke FunMovieoke
Well friends We managed another evening of Movieoke madness, a frighteningly ever changing animal that thankfully enough of us want to keep coming (hey it even got a mention in Bizarre magazine so we must be doing something right). This time usual host Tom had to leave early to do his paper round, i mean DJ at The Bell so the good people of the audience had to endure a mixture of yours truely and Barry. Sterling work by all I’d say. Anyhow some fine performances, a moment where the peformer was dumbstruck at the beauty of Star Wars and couldn’t say anything, a great performance by Creepy Liam in The Shining, My amazing performance playing 3 people using 2 hats in that scene from Lost In Translation where he does the advert for “>Suntory Whisky (cutto, cutto, cutto!), a utterly mental version of Groundhog Day (all acusations of sexual preferences by Mr. Grant are all allegedly true but may or not be actually true, Cube Legal team) a fine performance of The Evil Dead

Also a fine ensemble peformance of Reservoir Dogs featuring Me, Barry, a guy called Simon I think (who looked marvellous in a short sleaved Cricket Jumper). I was rather guilty of going a little bit off on one and may have been rude about half the audience, the performers and ahem women in comfortable shoes. Still if you listen the audience is laughing (especially Oli who you can hear Guffawing away in all the video clips) so it must be ok.

well a fine time was had by all, the drssing up box was put away and we all tottered off to our abodes,

Thanks for listening, Big Love Richie Paradise Richie (Lost in) Paradise

Yes, ’tis Strange

As circulated by Ed Siebert, The Cube and Bristol got a mention in Bizarre magazine.

see scan . . .

how bizarre

If you’re straining to read that, the bit about The Cube follows . . .

THE CUBE

The Cube is Bristol’s very own Microplex, an underground one-screen fleapit cinema, mixing internationally renowned live music, film, webcasts, DJs, performance art and some of the weirdest shit you are likely to find. Run by a ragtag team of bo-ho artist type volunteers pandering free-trade coffee and organic beer, its free-spirited chaos is its charm, even if the 1960’s projector might break down every other screening. Current regular nights include Movieoke (where you pick a film, have a rummage in the dressing-up box and step up to the stage to become a star) and To Hell With Hollywood (fucked-up mondo movies to give you night terrors).

It’s Not The Son Of God, It’s Movieoke

Movieoke
Well Novemeber saw the return of Movieoke to a new Wednesday night slot, with no Max (computer virus has meant we’ve had to send him to the computer mental home) and no Colin we soldiered (shouldered?) on with the more than capable Marcus Valentine marcus valentine and our usual human host Tom Morgan. And hey I kinda like the tag line ‘Movieoke, featuring Valentine and Paradise‘ anyway, am I right or am I right?
Anyhow, good old Liam was there also Laim to scare the hell out of us, anyhow he did a great job on the film changing.
Movieoke
Talking of good jobs, well done the medium sized and enthusiastic audience, come, come see the fruits of their labours:

Jaws, LOTR and Team America proved popular as always

You can find a couple more clips here and here. Some very strong performances possibly enhanced by the dressing up box that we provided,
dress up at movieoke dress up a veritable assortment of wigs, coats, shirts and props for the assembled crowd to enjoy dressing into. Possibly all this dressing and undressing was why we had a much more smutty version of Movieoke than usual. The great thing about Movieoke is the way it’s a real group activity, the audience kind of bonds as the night goes on and you’re gauranteed at least one moment of wetting yourself humour, where else can you get that for £3?

Anyhoo, Hope to see more of you beautiful things in Feb,

Big Love Richie Paradise Richie Paradise

ps Thanks to Lea on sound, Ben in the bar and the rest of the Movieoke work group.

Max Blackout

D’yall like the pun? Inspired by The World Cup I guess, and my own pretensions, I’m now punning in German. WOW.

First some behind the scenes shots of the putting the parts of Movieoke togetherness (or the general panicing and frantic last minute phone calls).

Exciting huh?

Anyhow Movieoke 9 bought us new exciting developments and mayhem. First of all Colin Smith was unable to play keyboards so into his huge shoes stepped Marcus Valentine from the Cube Orchestra Marcus Valentine Considering Marcus’ meagre talent, the lad did well. He also regalled the crowd with his jumping around on stage and general lunatic dancing, At one stage he even lept into my drum kit, for which I’d usually rompa i suoi piedini but the show must go on. I forget what film Marcus did but I do remember being pretty pleased with my own perfromance backing him up. Tom also showed hither unknown keyboards skills. I’m also pleased Marucus’ kids didn’t have to witness his embarrassing dad behaviour.
And yes Tom did host in his usual languid and skilful manner Tom Tom will be off somewhere soon so who will step into his shoes I do not know?
The night started slow but gradually filled up. At first only Daniel behind the bars friends Simon and Ana turned up.
Simon and Ana
I think they’d have been up for it even if they’d been on their own, Simon’s an Actor and Ana is a singer, as you’ll see in a moment. Anyway more turned up later and the Movieoke magic began………………………………………….

Listen out for the audiences enjoyment of the sponateous use of the word Bitch there.

Dave wasn’t too impressed when Max told him that scene was boring, so he regaled us with this performance:

There was of course plenty of other great performances but in a lull Austrian Ana got up and joined me and Marcus in a Movieoke song:

Good Job.

Well the night had to end for the punters, but so often the night just begins for us Cubesters.
I won’t go into too much detail but Chair dancing with Polly and a very drunk Mr Hopkinson (who introduced himself with the phrase, hello I’m very drunk) was very popular:

More dancing and girl fun continued. Here Zulieka, Lady Lucy and Polly play touch the bar and back race Run ladies run And more dancing Polly. Oh what a fine time we all had. I even had the chance to see Zulieka do some magic (I was very tired and drunk by now as you may be able to tell by my slurred words on this next clip).

A great time was had by all, I hope to see you at the next one,

Big Love Richie Paradise Richie Paradise

PS Marcus is hugely talented in case you thought I was serious about his talent actually being meagre (he also has very powerful lawyers).
