So one for the older members of the greater Cube community to enjoy. Ex Squaddie, writer, political activist and even MusicianBilly Bragg came to The Cube as part of a project dsigned to get guitars into prison to help in the rehabilitation of prisoners: Breaking Rocks
Anyhow it was great to see lots of old faces, the usual Billy Bragg tour t-shirts from latter years and to hear a couple of ex members of HMP sing some of the songs they’d written with the guitars they’d been given. Billy did a Q&A with film director Alan Milesthat was really interesting and then he played a couple of songs.
This was a really lovely night spent with one of the good guys amongst the usual lovely Cube audience and volunteers. Fight The Power, Richie Paradise
So a few months ago was a fascinating evening all about the legendary book Naked Lunch. This was a follow up to another great night all to do with William .S. Burroughs in which the The Cube Orchestra scored one of Burrough’s cut up films and I accompanied some poetry on drums.
Burroughs’ films are a firm fave of The Orchestra because they have lot of moods and interesting images for us to interpret through sound. Anyway there was also some rare stuff that Ben and gang had tracked down a well as some experts talking all about it. Sady I coldn’t stay for the whole thing but Ben captured some on video.
The night was a great example of what The Cube offers to Bristol that no where else can or does. Our thanks to everyone involved and to those who joined us.
Patrick Joyce, an old friend of The Cube was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease last year. He is doing a sponsored half marathon ( in a wheelchair pushed by others ) next month to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association ( www.mndassociation.org ) , who have given him a stairlift. As their funds are used to supply equipment, and research the condition – he wants to reimburse them towards the research side.
In support of him we are doing 2 events at The Cube on Saturday the 16th of May ( a week before the marathon ). A rare outing of Annabel Other’s Bristol Art Library ( TBAL ) . . .
. . . which will come along with a raffle, featuring BAFTA level prizes, and cake stand , with cakes made by a BAFTA winner standard baker.
In the evening there’s a cut price party night chock-full of delights . . .

“K pointed out that often, when you go out on New Year’s Eve, it can be a bit of a compromise: you go out to something that you wouldn’t normally go to, just because you feel you should be going out somewhere. Fascinating Virtue was an event we’d be excited to go to any day of the year.” /
