Some orchestral musings from the worlds favourite Richie FACT. Thursday saw a collaboration between The Heavy Heads and Orchestra Cube for an evening dedicated to the Beat Writers. There were several very rare films, one of which had been saved and rearranged by Genesis .P. Orridge which featured good old Uncle BillBurroughs. This film featured a live soundtrack by The Cube Orchestra. I thought we did a really good job and we featured a good cross section of instruments; Pedal steel Guitar, keyboards (x3), Harmonica, tabla, saxophone, drums, therimin, electric, bass & acoustic guitars and violin. Good job chums.
After that I improvised some drums whilst Poet Bij did his thing
I have to admit I’ve always loved the Beats, especially Kerouac so to be able to do something like this was great, big thanks to The Heavy Heads for letting us have the opportunity.
Well as documented previously I can’t always get to Orchestra these days as I’m rehearsing with my beat combo, talking of which we’re playing Mr. Wolf’s this Thursday:
But without me they have been very very busy, doing plenty of Bluescreen, a street party in Bishopston, and plenty of other random things I have forgotten about.
Probably best of all was the rather excellent Frank Zappa night at The Cube where the plucky souls, well I tell you what just watch the clip and find out for yourself:
It was a great night, Ale and Bel put a lot of effort into finding old clips of Zappa, and a few favourites too. Top night.
Mid November saw the Cube Orchestra venture South of the river (kinda, if you know your geography) to Spike Island where we had been invited to play on/with a very interesting piece by Turkish Artist Can Altay. The piece is called Ey Ahali!. “Ey Ahali!” is the typical phrase of the traditional introduction to a public announcement, verbally made by shouting on the streets.
Anyhow you can see Uncle Liam and the gang here and then good old YouTube has two clips.
I enjoyed meeting some new members of the Orchestra as I don’t get down so often these days, venerable types each and every one of them. Look out on the clips for some of these handsome chaps
A few regulars too, Ale on guitar/voice, Richard keys, Liam on Trombone (1st time ever), Mark on sax and me on Handsonic . This was great fun, basically for those too lazy to follow links the stage is the art, it has speakers in which you plug into. A small but appreciative audience seemed to enjoy themselves, as did the Orchestra who celebrated with beer and snacks at the Arnolfini afterwards.
Hello Chums, apologies for the lack of posting, basically I’m a lazy sod, unlike these plucky fellows
Upstanding decent fellows every last damn one of them. Come to the Cube and see more of them.
So, Things I have failed to Blog:
The Cube Cabaret/9th Birthday Bash - Reason - ‘I’m editing footage and didn’t take any photos and anyhow didn’t Mr. Hopkinson do a wonderful job?’. Cabaret/Ladyfest - Reason - ‘Not my finest moment……….’
Cube Orchestra playing to Haxan and The Sea Hawk (starring hottie Errol Flynn) - Reason - ‘Possessed by an evil spirit’. Skulpture (Cube OrchestraFree Jazz spin off band) at The Junction - Reason - ‘Gagging order by local constabulary’.
A while ago The Cube Orchestra had the good fortune to be asked to play a live soundtrack to the legendary Die Busche der Pandora also known as Pandora’s Box
It’s a really superb film and features the stunning and enigmatic Louise Brooks. Interesting enough The Cube’s own Zulieka Gregory bears a vaguely similar look (she’ll love me for saying that) which made playing along an amusing experience. Zuleiek also came along and did her BlusheretteThang
The Film was very atmospheric, moody and very interesting in it’s edgy for the time subject matter and a large and appreciative audience enjoyed the film and score.
I only caught 11 seconds on video but it’s worth all eleven seconds
A great time was had by all, even the bar staffbut I wouldn’t mes with them..
